On a cool day at the Wall Twp Soccer Facility, the Montclair based SDFC Rangers (based out of the Soccer Domain, Montclair) capped a phenomenal 2011 with a 3-1 victory over highly ranked SSC Falcons of Stronghold. The Rangers, coached by Kieran Patrick of Sports Domain Academy, reached the final on the back of four victories scoring 14 goals, led by Mason Toye's 3 goals, while conceding only 3 by way of stout defense from goalkeeper Ethan Koehler and his defensive stalwarts – Joel Bacha, Quinn Baity, Sam Givens, Alex Nicol and Charlie Williams. Throughout the tournament, the Rangers had 8 different scorers with the midfield players not only controlling the possession, but also joining the forwards on the scoring records. Game changing goals from Jared Brusco early in the tournament and Matthew Howlett in the semi-final were pivotal in maintaining the cup run for the Rangers.
The Rangers arrived at the final, undefeated in all competitions since September 17th and full of confidence from winning the YMS Columbus Cup which is one of the East Coasts top ranked tournaments. Playing against the wind in the first half, the Rangers still controlled possession and territory with disciplined play in midfield with Howlett and Junior Gjeli linking well with forward Nour Ellisy to create some early chances. The breakthrough finally came when Max Maidenberg connected with a Henry Kraham cross to finish expertly after 15 minutes. The goal gave life to the SSC offense who equalized after 22 minutes from a rebounded penalty save from Koehler. 1-1 at half time, but with wind playing a huge factor the Rangers players, coaches and parents felt the Championship was in touching distance. The Rangers took the game to SSC and were dominating play, but were limited to long range efforts from Kevin O'Toole and Gjeli. After losing Toye and O'Toole to injury and with crossbars and posts being hit from close range, the SDFC faithful were getting anxious. Finally, the pressure tolled on the SSC back line and a Ben Neyer volley from Maidenberg's corner settled the nerves, but not the game. Knowing a third goal would bring the championship back to the Soccer Domain, the Rangers continued to press and fine work from Kraham gave Neyer a tap in to begin the celebrations for the crowd. The defensive unit and keeper just had to see out one last flurry from SSC before three final blasts of the referee's whistle signaled the SDFC Rangers as the U13 State Cup Champions for 2011/12. The success means that the Rangers will represent the state of NJ at the Regional Champions in July, 2012.
The state championship was the high point of a tremendous year for the Rangers which sees them finish the year ranked number 1 in the Nation after winning the NJ Cup, YMS Columbus Cup and recently losing out in the final of the Super Y League Nationals in Tampa. Coach, Kieran Patrick delighted with his team points out that, "the success these boys have enjoyed this year is no more than they deserve for their commitment to development since u9. We have worked tirelessly on a specific style of play that is enjoyable to play and watch and I am pleased that the patience of the players, parents and the SDFC club is visible with these championships and the recognition they are receiving."
The championship is the 3rd State Cup win for SDFC in its first 3 years who base their training out of the Soccer Domain in Montclair.
